The sodium test is a blood test that measures the amount of sodium in the bloodstream. Sodium is a vital electrolyte, which is a mineral that helps manage fluid balance in the body. It also supports the proper functioning of nerves and muscles. The body works hard to maintain sodium levels within a narrow range. The kidneys are responsible for keeping sodium levels balanced. This is achieved through hormones that regulate sodium and water loss mainly through urine. A change in the sodium-water balance of the body can lead to altered sodium levels in blood. The sodium test detects if the sodium levels in the blood are too high or too low. Abnormal levels may indicate kidney disease, dehydration, or other health problems. The test therefore helps reveal any issues with the fluid-electrolyte balance of the body and assess the overall health status.

A sodium blood test may be needed as a part of regular health checkups. It is also advised if you are on medications that affect the fluid balance in the body such as diuretics or intravenous fluids. High sodium levels, known as hypernatremia, can cause various symptoms. Thirst is one of the first signs. Other symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, and confusion. Muscle spasms and little urination can also occur. If these high levels are not treated, they can lead to severe complications. A coma may happen, which can be life-threatening. Low sodium levels, called hyponatremia, can lead to different symptoms. Weakness and fatigue are common. Confusion, muscle twitching, and seizures may also occur. What your results can mean — always review them with your doctor:

Sodium levels in the blood are measured in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). A normal range is 137 to 145 mmol/L. If sodium levels are within this range, it shows a healthy balance of electrolytes. This means that the body is managing fluids well and there are no major health concerns related to sodium. High Sodium Levels: If sodium levels go above 145 mmol/L, it indicates hypernatremia. This condition can happen due to dehydration, problems with the adrenal glands, excessive diarrhoea, the use of diuretics (medications that increase urine), kidney disease, or diabetes insipidus (a condition that causes excessive thirst and urination). Low Sodium Levels: On the other hand, if sodium levels fall below 137 mmol/L, it indicates hyponatremia. This can occur due to diarrhoea, vomiting, kidney disease, liver failure, Addison's disease (a disorder affecting hormone production), or malnutrition. Abnormal sodium levels require additional investigation, and doctors will consider these results along with other tests and symptoms to identify the cause and decide on the best treatment.
