What is the CA 19.9 test?

The CA 19-9 test is a blood test that measures the CA 19-9 (cancer antigen 19-9) levels in the bloodstream. CA 19-9 is a tumour marker produced by cancer cells or normal cells in response to cancer. Most individuals with advanced pancreatic cancer show elevated CA 19-9 levels. However, high CA 19-9 levels can also be associated with other cancers as well, such as stomach, liver, lung, thyroid, and colorectal cancers. Additionally, elevated CA 19-9 may occur in non-cancerous conditions, including gallstones, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, and liver disease. Although elevated CA 19-9 levels may indicate the presence of certain cancers, this test is not used just for diagnosing cancer. Instead, it is most useful for monitoring the progression of cancer, predicting how the disease might behave over time, and assessing the effectiveness of cancer treatment. A decrease in CA 19-9 levels often suggests that the treatment is working and the cancer is responding, while an increase may indicate cancer growth or recurrence. Currently, no single test can diagnose early pancreatic cancer. The CA 19-9 test is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, such as Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) and Liver Function Tests (LFTs), based on your symptoms and medical history, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the disease. However, not everyone produces CA 19-9, even if they have cancers typically associated with high levels of this protein, thus making the test less effective in some individuals.

Why take the CA 19.9 test?

The CA 19-9 test is mainly used to monitor and track certain cancers, particularly those associated with high levels of the CA 19-9 protein. This test helps doctors check for cancer, see how well treatment is working, and determine if the cancer has come back after treatment. Elevated CA 19-9 can be seen in cancers of the pancreas, colon, stomach, lungs, thyroid, and bile duct, and also some non-cancerous conditions like pancreatitis. Because of this, the test is not used as a routine screening tool unless an individual has symptoms of pancreatic cancer. CA 19-9 levels can provide information about whether the cancer is shrinking, if it has been fully removed, or if it is coming back. Therefore, this test can be used to monitor treatment efficacy and guide treatment decisions along with other tests, like CT scans and ultrasounds.
