What is the Rheumatoid Factor (RA) test?

The Rheumatoid Factor test is a blood test to detect rheumatoid factor antibodies in the bloodstream. These antibodies are typically produced by the immune system to defend against infections. However, in some cases, they can mistakenly attack healthy tissues, leading to autoimmune disorders. The RF antibodies usually target the synovium, a soft tissue lining inside joints, causing inflammation. Over time, this leads to joint damage and pain, which are characteristic symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factor (RF) is one of the many antibodies associated with autoimmune disorders and is typically associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). About 80% of patients with RA test positive for RF antibodies. However, it is important to note that a positive RF test alone does not confirm RA. Elevated RF levels may also indicate other autoimmune diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome and chronic infections. Some individuals without any such conditions may also have elevated RF levels, and additional tests are often required for a conclusive diagnosis. The RA Factor test is an essential diagnostic tool for healthcare professionals, helping them identify autoimmune conditions early.

Why take the Rheumatoid Factor (RA) test?

The RA Factor test is useful in diagnosing and managing various health conditions, as follows: Diagnosing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) : The RF test helps determine if someone has RA, a condition characterised by painful and swollen joints. The presence of RF antibodies in the blood can indicate RA. However, not everyone with high RF levels has RA, and some people with RA may not have high RF levels. Assessing Disease Severity : The RF test provides insight into the severity of RA. High levels of RF often suggest a severe condition, with more joint damage and other complications. Early Detection : The RF test can sometimes detect RA before symptoms appear. Early detection allows for quicker treatment, which may help reduce the severity of the disease. Guiding Treatment : Although the RF test alone is not used to monitor treatment progress, it can assist doctors in choosing the most effective treatments. For example, individuals with high RF levels before treatment may respond poorly to TNF-alpha inhibitors. Diagnosing Other Conditions : The RF test is also useful for identifying other autoimmune diseases, such as Sjögren’s Syndrome (which causes dry mouth and eyes), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (arthritis in children), lupus (which affects multiple organs), scleroderma (which hardens the skin and connective tissues), and mixed connective tissue disease (which shows symptoms of several autoimmune disorders). Additionally, it can help diagnose chronic infections like hepatitis C (a liver infection), tuberculosis (a bacterial infection affecting the lungs), and infective endocarditis (an infection of the heart’s lining). Overall, the Rheumatoid Factor test is an important tool for diagnosing RA, assessing its severity, and guiding treatment, and it can also aid in diagnosing other autoimmune diseases and chronic infections.

Understanding your report

What your results can mean — always review them with your doctor:

RF is measured in International units per millilitre (IU/mL) of blood. Normal Result: If your RF test result is less than 14 IU/mL, it indicates that your RF levels are within a healthy range. Positive Result: A positive RF result means your RF levels are higher than normal. This does not automatically mean you have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or another condition but indicates the need for further investigation. High RF might be caused by: Autoimmune Diseases: Elevated RF levels can be associated with autoimmune diseases, such as RA. Chronic Infections and Inflammatory Conditions: High RF levels can also occur in chronic infections and other systemic inflammatory conditions. Age Factor: Healthy individuals over 65 years of age might also have slightly elevated RF levels. If you have high RF levels, your doctor may require further tests and a diagnosis will be made based on your test results, past medical history, and symptoms.
